Gem refractometer (gem refractometer) is an instrument used to measure the refractive index of gemstones. It uses a hemisphere of a high refractive index homogeneous material (such as lead glass or synthetic cubic zirconia) as a prism; through the prism, the light directed at the light-thinning substance to be measured, the light less than the critical angle enters the light-thinning substance, and on the eyepiece If these lights cannot be seen, it appears as a dark field; the light rays greater than the critical angle are totally reflected back to the prism, and a bright field appears on the eyepiece; the dividing line between the light and dark fields is equivalent to the position of the critical angle. A ruler is installed under the eyepiece, engraved with the refractive index value corresponding to the critical angle, and the value indicated by the boundary between light and dark areas is the refractive index of the measured substance. In order to make the interface of the tested gemstone and the prism table come into close contact, a drop of immersion oil whose refractive index is lower than that of the prism material and higher than that of the gemstone (commonly used high refractive index immersion oil n=180) should be added between the two. , If the refractive index of the measured gemstone is higher than that of the immersion oil, the correct result cannot be read. The refractometer can not only measure the refractive index and birefringence of gems and jade, but also can be used to determine the positive and negative of axial and optical properties. Using a monochromatic light source or color filter, it can also be used to determine the dispersion value.
